Betty Underwood

Betty Underwood, lovingly known as “Goat,” will be remembered as a sweet and spirited woman whose candid way of speaking and warm presence brought laughter and love to those around her. She was Chickasaw, and after living in Texas for several years, she returned to Oklahoma, where she made her home for more than 20 years.

Throughout her working life, Betty was devoted to caring for others and to the work of her hands. She worked as a cook and housekeeper, spent time working in nursing homes, and also worked as a seamstress in a sewing factory and in manufacturing, including at a facility in Tishomingo. Sewing remained one of the things she loved most, reflecting both her skill and her steady nature. She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and word puzzles in newspapers and magazines, simple pleasures that suited her sharp mind and independent spirit.

Betty was described by those who knew her as a very sweet woman, though she could also be stubborn. She was known for speaking before thinking, and her humorous, candid comments often caught the family by surprise and left them laughing. Time spent with her was treasured, not only for her love but also for the joy and laughter she brought so naturally. Her family especially remembered joking with her and sharing moments that became lasting memories.

Nothing mattered more to Betty than her family. Her children and grandchildren were among her proudest accomplishments, and they remained a constant source of joy in her life. She looked forward to seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and made special trips to visit them, including visits to the Fox area. Those journeys spoke to the depth of her love and the importance she placed on staying close to the people she cherished most.

She is survived by her children, Michael and Wife Deborah Hook of Tishomingo, Danny Hook, and Douglas Hook of Pontotoc; her sister, Vera Moore of Durant and  her grandchildren Jared Harris, Mikayla Embry, Heath Hook, Danya Hook,  Austin Hook. She is all survived by 5 great grandchildren.  Each of them carries forward memories of her sweetness, her strong will, her laughter, and the unmistakable way she could say exactly what was on her mind. Her love for her family was evident in the time she gave, the visits she made, and the pride she took in watching her family grow.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, John Underwood and Lillie Underwood, and by her siblings, Carlton, Cletus, Charles, Nellie, and Lottie. As her family remembers her, they also honor the place she held among those who went before her and the life she shared with those who remain.

Betty Underwood will be remembered with affection for her hardworking life, her loving heart, her quick and unfiltered wit, and the happiness she brought to her family. Her memory will live on in the laughter she inspired, the care she gave, and the love she never hesitated to show.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Hartwell Funeral Home for their assistance during this difficult time.
