Kay C “Sarge” Byars, a beloved figure in the Tishomingo community and a cherished member of her family, passed away peacefully at her home in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, on May 17, 2026. Born on February 14, 1954, Kay left behind a legacy defined by warmth, loyalty, and an unwavering spirit that touched the lives of those who knew her.
Known affectionately to many as “Sarge,” a nickname that captured her strong, caring nature, Kay dedicated many years to working as the cook at the Dairy Queen here in Tishomingo. Her place behind the counter was more than a job—it was a cornerstone of community, where her laughter and kindness created a welcoming family atmosphere for all who visited.
Kay’s passions extended beyond her career as she found joy in simple pleasures that defined who she was. She loved riding in the truck, often taking the role of navigator, creating memorable journeys filled with sisterly chatter and laughter. An avid fan of crossword puzzles, she could often be found quietly absorbed in her favorite pastime, cherishing the challenge and satisfaction each puzzle brought. She also loved playing dominos with family and friends. Her love of socializing was evident in the joyful fellowship she shared with friends, especially over games of pool and cards—activities that brought out her playful spirit and deepened bonds of friendship.
Animal lovers will remember Kay’s tender heart for all creatures. As a devoted member of the ASPCA, she greatly enjoyed watching Animal Planet, letting the stories of the animal kingdom inspire and uplift her. Her compassion extended to her special furbaby, Xavier, who held a special place in her heart and life.
Family was the center of Kay’s pride and joy. Though she faced the pain of losing her parents, Clyde and Kate Pendergraft, her husband Dewayne Bear Byars, her sons Justin Kyle Pendergraft and Trent Norman Byars, and a special nephew Wyatt Harbert, her love lived on vibrantly in the hearts of those she dearly cherished. She took immense pride in her boys and all her nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews, whose lives she enriched with her unwavering love and steadfast support.
Kay is survived by her sister, Pennye Pendergraft of Tishomingo; nieces Shanna Kaye Harbert and Kate Irene Watkins, both of Tishomingo; and a wonderful extended family of great nephews and nieces: Connor Michael Nestor of Tishomingo, Brayden Sue Futrell of Stillwater, Katelyn Reece Quirey, Kane Liam Quirey, and Remington Kashlyn Watkins—all from Tishomingo. Their love and countless memories connected to Kay will be treasured always.
The loss of Kay C “Sarge” Byars leaves a tender space in many hearts across Tishomingo and beyond. Her devotion to family, friends, and community, her cheerful spirit, and her deep compassion stand as a timeless testament to a life well-lived and filled with love. As we remember and honor Kay, we carry forward the joy she brought into our lives and the indelible mark she left behind.
Rest in peace, dear Sarge. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
