Wanda Lee Hinkle was born in Bonham, Texas on December 7, 1938, to Rev. Fred C. and Dona Hinkle. She entered the gates of Heaven on June 30, 2023, in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. Wanda was the middle of three daughters. The family moved to Tishomingo in 1954 when her dad accepted the position to pastor the Tishomingo Church of the Nazarene. Wanda graduated from Tishomingo High School in 1956. After graduation, she attended Murray State College and worked at First State Bank as a teller. She met a young man, whose family also attended the Nazarene Church and fell in love. Wanda married Guy Edwin Combes on November 9, 1958, and established their home west of town. She was a devoted wife and mother. Her proudest accomplishments were her three children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Along with her years at First State Bank, Wanda also worked at The Capital Democrat, Landmark Bank, and Murray State College where she retired after 25 years of service as Secretary to the Director of Occupational Education. Wanda was also very active in her church where she served on the church board for many years as church secretary and head steward. She also taught Sunday School classes and sang alto in the church choir.
Wanda is survived by one son, Clay & Anna Beth Combes of Tishomingo: two daughters, Caren & Carl Atteberry of Tishomingo, and Cleta & Jerold Phillips of Ardmore. She is also survived by one sister, Freda & Doyle Brinkley of Greenville, Texas. She was Mau to eight wonderful grandchildren and six adorable great-grandchildren: Chad & Amber Atteberry, Colin & Tiffany Atteberry, Catie Combes, Denise & Ricky Henry, Cayla & Jesse Meadows, Christina & Mitchell Reed, Jeromy Phillips, Courtney Phillips, Elly Atteberry, Harper Atteberry, Indy Atteberry, Peyton Atteberry, Holten Atteberry, and Olivia Henry. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years; her parents; one sister, Geraldine Robinson; and one great-grandson, Carter Atteberry.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 10:00 am at the Tishomingo Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Richard Sowder officiating assisted by Rev. JT Carnell with interment to follow at Tishomingo Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Hartwell Funeral Home, 320 West Main, Tishomingo, Oklahoma.
